Chapter 7: Shooting Oneself in the Foot

~

Upon hearing such an answer, Yun Qianfeng knew that he couldn't stop Jiang Roujia from going to the deep mountains and forests to find her brother. This was very troublesome, so he sighed and said:

"Let's hope for another possibility! Perhaps your memories are just coincidences, or something protected your memories. Otherwise, I have no idea what we will be facing. The unknown is too frightening! Sometimes ignorance is bliss."

After saying that, he looked at Jiang Roujia and continued:

"Come, let's carefully examine your bedroom. If there's something protecting your memories, the most likely place for it would be in your bedroom. It's worth checking."

Jiang Roujia agreed with him and hurriedly led Yun Qianfeng to her bedroom located deep inside the courtyard.

Amidst a faint fragrance, Jiang Roujia pushed open the bedroom door. They both entered the room.

As soon as Yun Qianfeng entered, he went straight to the bed, inspecting the bedding and examining the carvings on the wooden bed. He even crawled under the bed to inspect it with a flashlight.

After finding nothing on the bed, he asked:

"Show me your personal belongings."

Jiang Roujia's face instantly turned red, but she still led Yun Qianfeng to the wardrobe in the dressing room and opened the large cabinet specifically for underwear.

When the cabinet door opened, Jiang Roujia's face became even redder, and she pursed her lips, not saying anything.

Yun Qianfeng, upon seeing the various colored and styled bras and panties, also froze for a moment.

This delicate and shy little girl even had thongs.

Immediately, he coughed and lowered his head, saying:

"Um... I mean, these are personal belongings, but the fabric itself doesn't have a magnetic field. When I said 'personal belongings,' I meant things like jewelry or amulets made of metals or gemstones that have magnetic fields and radiation."

Upon hearing this, Jiang Roujia gave him a skeptical look. She had reason to suspect that he did it on purpose, just to see her underwear, and now he was pretending to be innocent and shifting the blame onto her.

Was Yun Qianfeng that kind of person? What a tricky question.

Jiang Roujia forcefully closed the cabinet door, then turned around and opened another side of the cabinet, filled with dazzling jewels, precious stones, and wristwatches. At the same time, she coldly snorted and put her hand into her chest, taking out a pendant and said:

"It's all here; take a look for yourself," Jiang Roujia said as she glanced at the dazzling jewels. However, Yun Qianfeng was drawn to the pendant hanging around Jiang Roujia's neck. Since she didn't seem to have any intention of taking it off, he had no choice but to walk over and carefully examine it.

The object looked like a rhombus-shaped stone with a dark blue color and intricate golden patterns that resembled a circuit board when not observed closely.

Though it was lightweight, the texture was not that of wood or plastic; even a tap produced a faint metallic sound.

Yun Qianfeng fetched a magnifying glass and carefully observed the golden patterns. He couldn't help but marvel, saying, "Such exquisite craftsmanship! So many texts and patterns carved on this tiny object, some of which seem to be related to water and mountains. But I'm not certain."

He paused and swallowed his saliva.

Behind the pendant was the collar, and the inside of the collar was quite impressive.

Jiang Roujia immediately noticed Yun Qianfeng's unusual expression due to her sensitivity as a girl. Her face turned even redder, and she stepped back, trying to act composed as she said, "My brother said the material of this pendant is extremely rare and hasn't even been named yet. It's one of the lost items from the Yuanmingyuan (Old Summer Palace) a hundred years ago. I don't know how my brother managed to get it back, but he gave it to me some time ago, calling it a precious treasure and told me to keep it with me to avoid losing it."

Yun Qianfeng pondered and said, "In ancient times, there were the Three Yi: Lianshanye Yi, Guizang Yi, and Zhouyi. Lianshanye Yi was used for divining the fate of ordinary people and could be considered earth divination. Zhouyi was used for divining the fate of emperors and was incomplete, so it could only be used for observing celestial and earthly changes. On your pendant, some of the texts resemble the Water Book of Lianshanye Yi, and the others I don't recognize. I assume they are also lost Lianshanye Yi texts. So, if there's a one in a thousand chance that something protected your memories from being influenced, then this pendant is the most likely explanation."

Jiang Roujia didn't express approval or disagreement with this explanation and said, "It's just a pattern. Could it really have such great power? It's too mystical, even more so than fortune-telling based on handwriting, as you do."

Yun Qianfeng smiled and shook his head, saying, "Let me ask you a question. If we knew our civilization was about to be destroyed, what do you think our scientists and elites would do to pass down knowledge to the surviving people?"

Jiang Roujia pondered for a moment and shook her head, saying, "I don't know. That's a difficult question, and I can't decide what to choose."

Yun Qianfeng responded, "It's quite easy to decide. The first priority would undoubtedly be to preserve seeds of various food crops because that's the foundation for the survival of the survivors. The second priority would be traditional Chinese medicine instead of Western medicine because without industry, Western medicine would be challenging to use, but traditional Chinese medicine, which can be sourced from the surroundings, can treat diseases."

The third priority would undoubtedly be relativity because it represents the pinnacle of scientific thinking in our civilization so far. Countless archaeological discoveries suggest that there might have been more advanced civilizations on this planet before we even learned to make fire with wood.

So, who can guarantee that symbols like Lianshanye Yi, Guizang Yi, River Map and Luo Book, and the Eight Trigrams, which we can't trace the origins of, are not the "traditional Chinese medicine" and "relativity" left behind by the previous civilization?

Perhaps mysticism has never been mysticism; it's just that we've been using it in the wrong context."

Jiang Roujia touched the pendant and murmured, "Does this little thing really possess such tremendous power?"

Yun Qianfeng smiled and replied, "Power doesn't necessarily need to be immense; it just needs to be appropriate. Perhaps it's merely a coincidental magnetic field and radiation. The microcosmic world is incredibly marvelous and unpredictable. We can't judge it with our simple mortal thinking."

Jiang Roujia continued, "You know, my brother asked me to keep this little thing with me all the time. Do you think he had a premonition of something?"

Yun Qianfeng nodded and said, "That possibility can't be ruled out. I'm really worried now. What if one day I wake up and completely forget you, even our agreement? Wouldn't that be a breach of contract?"

Seeing that Jiang Roujia was determined to go to the primitive rainforest to find her brother, which was extremely dangerous, Yun Qianfeng was trying to find a way out for himself. He made up his mind that he would lose his memory tomorrow.

Jiang Roujia pursed her lips, her brows furrowing as if she was struggling with some thoughts. Then, she quickly walked out and returned with a bundle of paracord in her hand. She looked at Yun Qianfeng and said rapidly, "From now on, you must stick with me like a shadow, even when we sleep at night. As long as you stay close enough to me, this Lianshanye Yi pendant can protect me, and therefore, it can protect you too! I don't want to wake up tomorrow to find you have a different memory. I'm going all-in now, and you must fulfill the contract to help me find my brother. Of course, before we sleep, you must let me tie you up."

Yun Qianfeng was stunned.

She actually found a way to counter it! This was something Yun Qianfeng had never expected.

"My foot is a bit sore now!" he added with a sigh.
